Decorating your apartment can be an exciting but also intimidating experience. We interviewed some local interior design experts to share their insights to maximize the aesthetic potential of your living space. Read on to see some of their top tips for creating a stylish new look for your apartment.

Multipurpose Furniture

David Martin from Urban Living Designs suggests, “Utilize furniture that can function for several purposes such as a coffee table also being used as a desk. This can really help to save space and still be functional.” For a small living space having multipurpose furniture is a must for making the most of your space without creating too much clutter.

Utilize Vertical Space

For an apartment it’s important to utilize the space to be functional, and finding enough storage space can be difficult. One way to increase the amount of storage in your apartment is to maximize the use of vertical space. According to Emma Thompson from Thompson Interiors, she suggests, “Install tall bookshelves, or wall mounted vertical elements to create visual interest as well as creating functional storage space.”

Choose Neutral Colors

While the occasional accent color to make a color scheme eye catching can create visual interest to a living space it’s easy to go overboard. Micheal Hernandez from Hue Harmony states that “Starting with a neutral color palette creates visual harmony and allows you to easily make changes and add colors without losing consistency in the design.”

Utilize Mirrors

Especially when working with a smaller living space, mirrors can create an illusion of space and make areas feel much more open. According to Laura Davis from Reflective Designs, “Mirrors are a powerful tool to not only create the illusion of more space, but also to increase the brightness by reflecting natural light throughout the space.”

Frequently Asked Questions About Decorating Your Apartment

What are the best color schemes for decorating a small apartment?

Neutral colors, like whites, grays, and beiges, are excellent for small apartments as they create a sense of space and harmony. Adding accent colors through furniture or accessories can bring energy and personality to the room without overwhelming it. Lighter colors help reflect natural light and make rooms feel bigger, while dark tones can create warmth and intimacy when used sparingly.

How can I make a small apartment feel more spacious?

To create the illusion of space, utilize mirrors to reflect light and open up the room visually. Maximize vertical space by installing tall bookshelves or wall-mounted storage. Choosing multipurpose furniture, such as a sofa that doubles as a bed or a coffee table with hidden storage, helps keep clutter at bay and makes your apartment feel more organized.

What type of furniture is best for small apartments?

Opt for multipurpose and compact furniture. Foldable or extendable pieces like dining tables or desks can be stored when not in use, while multifunctional pieces like a sofa that converts into a bed or a coffee table with built-in storage maximize functionality. Additionally, lightweight furniture that can be easily moved around allows for more flexibility in your layout.

How do I incorporate personal style into a rented apartment without making permanent changes?

You can personalize your space with removable decor such as peel-and-stick wallpaper, stylish rugs, throw pillows, and artwork. Non-permanent lighting options, like floor lamps or string lights, can also add warmth and character. Use furniture that reflects your style, and accessorize with plants, books, or unique decorative items that you can easily take with you when you move.

Can I decorate my apartment on a budget?

Yes! Decorating on a budget is possible with some creativity. Thrift stores and online marketplaces can provide affordable furniture and decor. DIY projects like painting old furniture or making your own wall art can add personality without the high cost. Focus on key items that will make a significant impact, such as a stylish rug or a set of statement pillows, and slowly build your collection over time.

Make It Feel Like Home

We hope these insights from these experts have inspired you to start decorating your space with confidence. Be sure to also add your own personal touches with mementos, keepsakes, or anything else that makes your space feel more like your home.
