You’ll see that you have a lot of choices as you search for your next apartment home, but which one is right for you? If you are searching for a space for a small family or as a single renter, you have your pick between floor plans, from open-concept homes to vertical layouts in townhomes and lofts. As you narrow down your options, ask yourself if having a garage is important to you.

Today, we’ll go over all the reasons you may consider renting an apartment home with a garage. We’ll walk through the advantages that show up during winter weather, how they can help your car last longer, and the convenience they add to everyday tasks.

1. You Can Avoid the Snow in the Winter

It may not be easy to appreciate in the warmer months, but having an apartment with a garage when the weather turns cold can make a major impact every time you hit the road. Snow can build up quickly, and the Weather Channel’s prediction of a flurry can turn into a few inches before you have time to cover your windshield. Keeping your car dry and ready to go in your home garage means you can spend less time dusting your windshield and hop into a car that’s already warm.

Ice can be just as problematic, and it’s not just on the roads. Without a garage, ice can be an issue before you can even get inside. Exposed doorknobs can become frozen, leaving you stuck without a way in, and ice can build up on your windshield to create a thick film that is just as hard to see through as it is to chip away. You can avoid all of this and make every morning easier in an apartment home with a garage.

2. Auto Maintenance Is Easy in Apartment Homes With Garages

A woman tightens the lug nuts on her wheel after attaching a spare tire to her car.

Keeping your car out of the cold, as well as all the other elements, is a great way to help it last longer. Even a sunny day can cause damage to your car. The constant UV rays can eat away at the clear-coat finish protecting your paint, while rising and falling temperatures can all cause wear and tear on your car. Couple that with the risk of rain, hail damage, and debris kicked up by other vehicles, and it’s easy to see how a garage can help your car stay in its best shape.

But when you do need to do maintenance, you’ll be glad you have a garage. If you have a jack, stands, and a good bit of caution, it’s well within reach for most people to rotate their own tires or put on a spare at home, as long as you have the room. You can buy a battery-powered tire pump and check your pressure before you ever have to open the garage door, because the last thing you want is to find yourself on a flat while driving down a slick road.

3. Animals Aren’t an Issue in Garages

If you’ve never experienced an animal in your engine, you may be surprised to learn that it’s actually a very common problem. Rodents of all kinds, from chipmunks to mice, rats, and even possums, are always looking for somewhere dark and warm to nest. This is especially true as the weather gets colder, and your car’s engine bay is one of their favorite targets.

Once inside, they’ll often explore, making their way through your car’s body into the trunk and any open spaces they can find, chewing on wires and hoses along the way. Keep them out by keeping your car indoors.  Your garage is insulated, just like your home, so the outdoors stays out. That extra barrier makes your engine bay far less inviting, giving you one less thing to deal with during the colder months.

4. Garage Apartment Homes Are Great for Shopping

Shopping for groceries and then fighting for a parking space can be frustrating. You never know if you’ll be able to find a spot close to your door, and making multiple trips back and forth from your car is exhausting.

While it’s not the most flashy part about owning an apartment with a garage, having to move your groceries only a few steps from your trunk to the door can be a game-changer on holidays or whenever you are simply tired of hauling your bags across the parking lot. Your space is always there, and it’s always climate-controlled, and no one’s ever going to take it, so relax, take your time, and take some stress out of shopping.

5. Apartments With Garages Give You More Space

Some things simply can’t fit in your home. If you have shelves of food you are saving for a big occasion, stacks of books you are waiting to read, or any furniture you want to keep handy but tucked out of the way, your garage can give you the space you need.

It’s important to remember that some garages are shared between residents, so always feel free to double-check with one of our agents. We’ll help you figure out what options fit your floor plan so you can pick the layout that works best for you.
